7 Mistakes of Participants Make in Football Betting Games

Participants in Football Betting Should Avoid Certain Risks

In my opinion, those who participate in football betting should avoid a number of risks, some of which I will discuss in this article.

Placing a bet on the home team “not to win” often produces the opposite result. Teams generally feel much more comfortable playing on their own pitch. Moreover, they are fully accustomed to the turf conditions. The so-called “12th player” — the fans — provide a strong motivational boost. Players feel a great sense of responsibility, whether the spectators are in the stadium or watching via local TV broadcasts.

We should not forget another important factor: unlike their opponents, home teams haven’t had to travel long distances and therefore are not fatigued. For this reason, regardless of the strength of the opponent, home sides tend to achieve more positive results. This is especially noticeable in championships in the United States, Brazil, Argentina, and other American countries. I always say — the sense of responsibility in front of the home fans there seems to be much stronger. Everything appears more transparent, too.

Everyone knows that teams take UEFA and other continental competitions much more seriously. Of course, this is their main goal. That’s why, before such matches, teams don’t always push hard for victory in their domestic league games. In most cases, even top clubs are satisfied with a draw, and defeats are not uncommon either. The main reasons are clear:

  • To avoid exhaustion before more important matches;

  • To prevent injuries;

  • To give a chance to second or third-string players or those who need match practice;

  • The opposing team often views this as a great opportunity and plays with high intensity.

All this can easily lead to dropped points. Such matches often end 1–1, 2–2, 0–1, or 0–2.

Bettors usually call these results “sensations.” Many refuse to believe these outcomes are not “fixed games.” 😄 Similar surprises also occur after continental matches, this time due to fatigue and long travel distances.

There’s another source of “sensations”: many observations show that leading teams often fail to thrash — or even beat — the bottom-ranked sides. Sometimes they even lose. In my view, this is part of a deeper and more complex strategic approach that’s hard to explain or understand. I’ll discuss that in more detail in one of my future articles. For now, I advise bettors to avoid such games whenever possible. Draws are the safer option.

As the season draws to a close, it’s common for the leading team to be 5, 10, or even 15 points ahead of its closest rival. For such leaders, gaining additional points or wins becomes less important. How can one ignore this?

Mathematical analysis shows that betting on very low odds rarely produces growth. Even odds in the 2.0–2.5 range generally result in slow and minor profits. Inexperienced bettors, in particular, can waste both time and effort.

On the other hand, betting on odds above 2.5 is also not easy. To keep the fun in betting, one must be very cautious and avoid taking risks without proper analysis.

Combining too many matches into one accumulator (combo) based on bookmaker odds greatly increases the risk. Long-term experience shows that in almost every 3–4 matches, at least one result turns out to be unexpected. Therefore, I recommend combining as few matches as possible — ideally no more than two or three.

In summary, avoid making the following specific mistakes:

  1. Betting on the home team “not to win” (X2).

  2. Betting on top teams to win immediately before or after continental competitions.

  3. Betting on league leaders to beat bottom-ranked teams.

  4. Betting on teams that have already secured the championship or their final position in advance.

  5. For inexperienced bettors, betting on odds below 2.5–3.0 rarely leads to success.

  6. For the same group, betting on odds higher than 2.5–3.0 is also very risky.

  7. Combining more than 3–4 low-odds matches in a single combo bet.
